Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Community and Technical College has an immediate opening for a Tutor Coordinator. The UAF CTC Tutor Coordinator is responsible for many of the day-to-day operations of the Debbie Moses Learning Center located within the UAF Community and Technical College and the Gruening Building Math Lab on the Troth Yeddha' Campus. This is a 12 month (full-time), exempt staff position complete with a competitive UA employee benefits package. Duties:

Provide quality tutorial services in writing or math at all levels and for all disciplines. Use individualized strategies and multiple approaches to meet a variety of student needs in individual, group, and distance tutoring sessions.

The tutor coordinator is responsible for tracking data on students served. The coordinator will work with the Director of Student Success to target supplemental instruction, which includes embedding tutors in key classes. The coordinator will develop quality assurance processes and written materials for Learning Center tutors, resulting in efficient workflows, increased customer service to students, and the creation of feedback mechanisms. Track usage and assess effectiveness of Learning Center programs including the assessment of student learning outcomes. Develop and implement quality assurance processes. Gather feedback on satisfaction with Learning Center services. Review trends and national standards in academic support to ensure quality learning center programs are provided to a broad range of students. This includes serving as a resource on writing and mathematics-related developmental education practices and coordinating new Learning Center outreach and programmatic offerings.

This position is also responsible for promoting awareness of academic support services by intentional marketing/communication efforts, collaboration with Nanook Navigator capabilities, social media, and more. Promote Learning Center services to the UAF community and other educational partners including the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District (FNSBSD) and the Literacy Council of Alaska. Spearhead and/or collaborate on special initiatives with other university departments including advising and academic departments and FNSBSD. Collaborate with the Director of Student Success and other staff on special projects, office organizational tasks, etc. as needed.

Leads and supports the training and development of quality programs and will coordinate the math and writing tutors using the College of Reading and Learning Association (CLRA) best practices and guidelines. Work with the Director of Student Success and the team program assistants (tutors) who provide both face to face and online academic support in study skills, math and writing. Coordinate the day-to-day operations of the CTC Debbie Moses Learning Center. Create a positive, open, intellectually stimulating environment for students. Create and maintain Learning Center hours and develop schedules for Math and Writing tutors providing a balance between in-person and online appointments, drop-in hours, and class-specific assignments. Develop and maintain math and writing tutor training programs, to include supervision and development and delivery of training of Learning Center tutors. Assist the Director of Student Success with the development, deployment, and analysis of customer services surveys, data compilation, and reporting projects. Develop, maintain, and analyze utilization data to support retention efforts at CTC. Prepare reports as necessary for internal and external review. Assist the Director where required, accommodate the overall needs of the Learning Center operation as a whole. This may include special projects and office organizational tasks, as needed and as available; scheduling flexibility in times of staffing shortages, evening shifts, weekend hours, etc.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

The successful candidate for this UAF CTC Tutor Coordinator position will be responsible for administrative, managerial, and clerical duties to include scheduling one-on-one and group workshops and training new tutors.  They must demonstrate strong customer care skills as they will be working with a diverse population of students, connecting students to the proper programs and resources, and will work collaboratively within both the University community and with other educational partners.

UAF CTC offers many associate degrees, certificates, and occupational endorsements at 9 locations throughout Fairbanks and the Tanana Valley of Interior Alaska. UAF CTC is responsive to local and regional vocational and technical training needs, and focuses on workforce development to meet the needs of the region and the state. UAF CTC's programs also provide students with the academic framework to help them achieve their higher education goals, whether it is to complete and associate of arts degree or transfer to a baccalaureate program.

In addition, UAF CTC provides career training and development opportunities through workforce development and professional development programs. Staff and faculty have forged close ties with businesses and local agencies, enhancing instruction and increasing job placements.

UAF CTC employs a diverse population of approximately 35 full-time faculty and 200 adjunct faculty who are represented by two unions and a staff of about 35. Approximately 3000 students attend UAF CTC. They are culturally diverse and include many non-traditional students and students from the military community.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:• Mastery of higher-order mathematics and/or academic writing as related to tutoring students in beginning, intermediate and advanced skill levels in a range of courses.
• Demonstrated experience tutoring in drop-in mathematics and writing tutorial setting.
• Knowledge of different tutoring and teaching strategies for different learning styles and needs.
• Knowledge of basic academic course content and academic support assistance in mathematics and/or writing.
• Extremely organized and detail oriented.
• Demonstrated ability to follow up with specific informational questions regarding sensitive or confidential material.
• Must have a positive, helpful attitude.
• Able to work as part of a team.
• Effective personal and cross-cultural communication skills in speech, writing and or mathematics.SPECIAL SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:

  • Organizational and administrative skills, including managing and tracking placement, local, and distance.
  • Knowledge of distance-education operations.
  • Expertise with spreadsheet or database programs such as MS Excel and Access.
  • Analytical abilities and understanding of data collection and analysis.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population with a variety of learning styles.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced university environment.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Ability to implement/program and interpret regional placement test cut-scores.
  • Ability to tutor students in lower and upper division courses. 
  • Knowledge of ALEKS and Accuplacer testing requirements.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

• At least two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) professional experience teaching and/or tutoring in an educational/academic setting or support center environment in a university setting.
• Demonstrated experience with small-group teaching/tutoring techniques across a variety of mathematics and/or writing ability levels.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Writing/English or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. At least two years.

At least two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) professional experience teaching and/or tutoring in an educational/academic setting or support center environment in a university setting.

Demonstrated administrative, managerial and/or clerical  experience.

SALARY INFORMATION:

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
