Environmental Coordinator (Remediation)

Position Description:

The Environmental Coordinator position is housed within the Environmental Department under the Remediation Program. The incumbent will support the planning, development and implementation of projects and programs focused primarily on the assessment, remediation, and reuse of brownfield sites and military impacted Tribal lands. Additional tasks in support of other environmental programs and partner organizations may be required.

Location: Unalaska or authorized remote location.

Reports to: Environmental Remediation Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

o Maintain regular and open communication with coworkers, Tribal Council, Tribal members, and partner organizations.

o Conduct work through the lens of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion on behalf of Qawalangin Tribal members.

o Maintain existing and develop new partnerships and projects with the Ounalashka Corporation, regional organizations, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and university researchers.

o Provide oversight to the Brownfields program, under the direct guidance of the Environmental Remediation Manager.

o Attend meetings, conferences, trainings, and workshops in support of program development and staff capacity building.

o Assist in developing Work Plans, Characterization Reports, Debris Removal Plans, Clean-Up Reports, and other documents as required by the program.

o Assist in preparation of reporting required by funding entities.

o Conduct a timely survey and inventory of brownfield sites.

o Update and maintain a public record of contaminated sites of concern.

o Prepare and implement public outreach and communication events, in-person or virtual depending on circumstances, regarding military impacts to lands on Unalaska.

o Document field and site activities using standard operating procedures.

Qualifications:

o Must be able to build and maintain positive relationships with Tribal, community and staff members.

o Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.

o Must be sensitive to community cultural values.

o Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.

o Must have an Alaska Driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 90 days of working for the Tribe.

o Must be able to work independently with little direct supervision.

o Must have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Toxicology, Remediation, or a related field. Minimum of four years relevant work experience may be substituted for a college degree.

o Must be proficient in Microsoft Office 365 programs, including Excel, Word, and SharePoint.

Pay: $66,560.00 - $76,960.00 per year
