Summary

Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT), an environmental health and justice research and advocacy organization, is seeking to hire a skilled, creative Media and Communications Manager who will lead the development and implementation of an effective communications and media strategy to advance the mission, vision, and campaigns of Alaska Community Action on Toxics.

Role and Responsibilities

The Media and Communications Manager is responsible for cultivating relationships with local, statewide, and national reporters from print, radio, and television media. The individual will also have primary responsibility for preparing news releases, and organizing media briefings, editorial board meetings, and other press events.

The candidate must be able to produce high quality content under deadline, and be adept at framing, messaging, and campaign planning.  The successful candidate will also be a skilled organizer who can inspire others to contribute smartly to meeting the organization's communications needs. Both strategic thinking and technical implementation are needed to succeed.

Qualifications: 

  • Passion for our mission toward achieving environmental justice and health.
  • At least two years of experience in media and communications, preferably with non-profit advocacy organizations.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in other education and/or experience.
  • Proven success in media relations, including framing and pitching media stories.
  • Experience with developing web content and managing social media campaigns.
  • A strong graphic design sensibility.
  • Exceptional messaging, writing, editing, storytelling, and presentation skills with the ability to write for a variety of audiences and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with journalists across all media formats, with an emphasis on cultivating relationships with reporters in the mainstream, ethnic, and trade media sectors.
  • Effective project management skills, able to prioritize and tackle multiple tasks at once within established deadlines.
  • Able to advocate effectively on the phone, in person and online.
  • Experience working collaboratively and respectfully with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to build enthusiasm and effort among a team of people.

Starting salary range is $53,000-60,000/year DOE. The position is based in Anchorage.
