The Alaska Alcohol Misuse Prevention Alliance (“The Alliance”) began meeting in December 2019 and is a system-shifting network of multiple and diverse partners across Alaska who recognize the impacts of alcohol misuse. We are committed to engaging people and communities as partners, to promoting individual and community wellness and preventing excessive alcohol use and harms in Alaska.

The Youth Wellness Coordinator is being brought on to support the efforts of the network, specifically focusing on underage alcohol use prevention and youth wellness. Supervisor: Alliance Wellness Coalition Coordinator
Wage Range: $27.00-$32.00/hour, depending on experience


Position Summary: The Youth Wellness Coordinator (YWC) oversees all aspects of assessment, planning, and implementation of underage alcohol use prevention and youth wellness work and integrates this work into the larger structures, processes, and practices of The Alliance. The YWC must be able to co-create and support implementation of solutions within a collaborative coalition. The YWC must be able to work effectively with engaged network members and partners, Recover Alaska staff, and Alliance contractors. This position requires a growth mindset, collaborative spirit, professional flexibility in managing and administering a variety of projects and working groups, superb organizational skills, and energy devoted to tackling the most commonly identified health problem in our state.

Essential Functions:
1. Coordinates an Underage Alcohol Use Prevention/Youth Wellness Community of Practice,
which will operate in alignment with current network structures and protocols. This will
include but isn’t limited to:

  • convene and coordinate a community of practice that supports community coalition partners and others working across the state through prioritizing community strategies that promote youth wellness and prevent underage alcohol use.
  • building community coalition capacity to implement strategies through training or mentorship
  • connect regional and state efforts with national best practices for underage alcohol use prevention
  • works collaboratively with other Alliance workgroups to align community of practice efforts with larger Alliance efforts, initiatives, structures, and practices.
  • member recruitment and engagement,
  • communication and outreach,
  • event planning and meeting facilitation, as needed.

2. Manages project timelines and tasks assigned to specific contractors/vendors that meet
assessment, evaluation, and planning needs of the Community of Practice. This will include but
isn’t limited to:

  • host listening sessions and/or other data collection activities to identify what influences underage alcohol use and current strategies that address this priority area,
  • integration of community of practice evaluation into the larger Alliance evaluation.

3. Supports a variety of activities in service to The Alliance and underage alcohol use prevention/youth
wellness statewide. This will include but isn’t limited to:

  • quarterly reporting to funders, including Alliance narrative evaluation and program report, and Recover Alaska Executive Director report
  • participation on a planning team, convened by the State of Alaska, that is responsible for the update of the Alaska Underage Alcohol Use Prevention plan.
  • participating in relevant statewide workgroups, coalitions, teams, and communities of practice.

4. Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including, but not limited to, Recover Alaska partners, mental health organizations, health care providers, the business community, media, religious organizations and other relevant wellness and prevention community coalitions, task forces and community members. Works in partnership with The Alliance Wellness Coalition Coordinator and Recover Alaska Executive Director and staff, Alliance workgroups, contractors, and network members.

Other Duties:


● Attends meetings and trainings as needed to support professional development, network growth and strategic implementation.
● Presents data and information specific to The Alliance or the Community of Practice at public meetings.
● Other duties as designated in collaboration with the Wellness Coalition Coordinator or Recover Alaska Executive Director.

Qualifications:
● Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:
○ Management and organization of multiple tasks and competing priorities: Able to organize, prioritize, and delegate tasks. Able to lead a group of community and network members through an assessment and planning process. Holds long term vision while managing short-term goals and tasks.
○ Collaboration and relationship-building: Able to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders across sectors and regions of the state. Seeks out opportunities to collaborate across the prevention and wellness field and among current contractors and network members engaged in Alliance activities. Recognizes the importance of relational trust and cultural humility in fulfilling the mission, vision, and goals of Recover Alaska and The Alliance.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:
● A Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as public health, communications, public administration, education, or four or more years of professional experience in community building or organizing, project management, or coalition leadership with consistent and increasingly accountable leadership roles in a community or organization.
● Interest and ability to support and promote The Alliance’s and Recover Alaska’s mission, vision, and goals.
● Commitment to a self-education practice and increasing fluency to communicate about the impacts and harms of systems, particularly power imbalances that result in oppressions like racism and colonization, and a demonstrated commitment to dismantling them.
● Experience collaborating and building relationships with individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds, including rural Alaska.
● High level of emotional maturity and willingness to resolve conflicts.
● Proficient in office skills including, but not limited to Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Google Docs, and an ability to learn how to use software currently being used by The Alliance (MURAL, Kumu, WordPress, Canva, etc.)
● Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
● Hold high value around communicating effectively and seeking out areas of collaboration.

Physical Requirements: Standard office tasks including sitting/standing at a workstation, traveling between work locations or participating in computer-based work tasks for extended periods of time, setting up meetings, typing and computer work, potentially packing mailers or letters for sending to partners.

This position will start from home, with the potential to transition to an office space either full or part-time as the COVID-19 pandemic decreases in intensity. Because so much of our work is statewide, meetings will continue to be conducted remotely, despite decreased intensity of the pandemic. Assistance can be given to ensure ergonomic workstation,
but the applicant must have a physical space where they can accomplish their work.


Notes: This position is grant funded by the State of Alaska’s Division of Behavioral Health. The timeline of this grant is January 2022- March 2023. Continued funding to ensure this position remains past March 2023 cannot be guaranteed. The Youth Wellness Coordinator is an employee of Sultana, and the position is administered through
