The Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition (JSPC) provides an array of suicide prevention efforts in Juneau, including regular trainings, public outreach and advocacy, school-based primary prevention and postvention services. JSPC is partnered with NAMI Juneau, a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Position Responsibilities
Since 2009, JSPC members have developed a variety of youth programs. The Youth Coordinator is responsible for managing the ongoing programs. The Youth Coordinator will work closely with an AmeriCorps member to administer the youth programs. Other staff members contribute to programming as well. In addition to coordinating existing programs, the Youth Coordinator will work with coworkers and partners to develop new groups based on need.

Program Implementation

  • Leads youth programs with assistance from AmeriCorps member and other staff. Programs include:
  • Signs of Suicide, a 75-minute presentation to middle and high school students that includes professional consultation with students who identify as at-risk.
  • Why I Stay…, an eight-week mental health storytelling project with university students. o Sources of Strength, a bi-weekly program with high school students.
  • Youth Chat, a four-week, small group discussion for middle school students to talk about mental health.
  • Choosing Health Options in Cooperative Education (CHOICE) camps, five overnight camps for high school students. Each camp has a theme related to mental health.
  • Develops new programming with partner organizations.


Administrative and Other Duties

  • Update and maintain records for grant reporting. o Participate in team meetings and actively support the efforts of coworkers.
  • Participate in staff equity and inclusion efforts.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience working with youth, particularly those aged 14-18.
  • Reliable and maintains a desire to make a positive impact in schools and in the community.
  • Commitment to social justice, equity and service to others.
  • Ability to work in team environments.
  • Creative thinker who is adaptable to changing conditions.
  • Proficiency in email and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to understand and communicate with people of different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or relevant experience.

Requirements

  • Passion for working with youth in Juneau.
  • Current driver’s license and auto insurance.
  • Clearance of state and federal background checks.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.


Other Details

  • NAMI Juneau and JSPC rely on grant funds. The Youth Coordinator position is fully funded through June 30, 2022 and we anticipate continued funding thereafter.
