JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE:

The Community Advocate position is currently scheduled for November 2021 – August 2022. There is a potential that this position will be extended and eventually become permanent.

Working with the On-site Program Manager leading the project, the position will be responsible for connecting Alaska Native women to available services that are intended for use by individuals experiencing homelessness, substance misuse issues, and re-entry after incarceration. May also collaborate with program staff in planning, developing, and implementing other cultural programs and activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as the primary intake staff for the Inupiphany program, located in Downtown Anchorage.
  2. Serve as liaison for program participants and service providers who have programs that are applicable to the population served.
  3. Coordinate activities, resources, equipment and information in collaboration with the on-site program manager
  4. Act as the point of contact for program participants, ANHC staff, and communicate effectively about various service providers in the Anchorage area.

Cultural Education:

  1. Interest in learning and sharing about traditional Alaska Native fishing, art, plants, hunting, dancing, storytelling, etc.
  2. Interest in the intersection of Alaska Native arts and healing from historical trauma.
  3. Ability to identify several craft activities and assist the program manager in the delivery of craft workshops.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  1. Experience with at-risk individuals such as those experiencing homelessness, substance misuse, and re-entry post incarceration.
  2. Sensitivity to the immediate and long-term needs of individuals going through challenging circumstances.
  3. Ability to convey, with compassion and patience, the services that are available and applicable to several program participants.
  4. Preliminary knowledge of Alaska Native cultures and a willingness to learn about the diversity amongst Alaska Native cultures.
  5. Individual will need good communication skills. 
  6. Individual must have the ability to multi-task and have the ability to use good judgment. 
  7. Solid organizational skills, including multitasking and time-management
  8. Strong client-facing and teamwork skills

Knowledge:

  1. Must have strong knowledge of the networks of support services for individuals who are experiencing homelessness, re-entry after incarceration, and substance misuse issues.
  2. Have basic knowledge of Alaska, Alaska’s history, and Alaska Native cultures. 
  3. Have a basic understanding of ANHC’s mission, direction, and history or be willing to receive training. 

Skills:

  1. Have basic writing and public speaking skills.
  2. Be able to utilize in Word and Excel.  
  3. Have intermediate computer skills.
  4. Skill in the use of copier, fax, and other office equipment.

Abilities:

  1. Receive direction and guidance from supervisors.
  2. Work as a team or independently.  
  3. Ability to problem solve on own and seek assistance from the supervisor as needed. 
  4. Be willing to take leadership responsibility. 
  5. Be flexible.  

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Additional duties as assigned based on needs of the business.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Weather:

  1. Indoors: Primarily in an environmentally controlled office;
  2. Outdoors: Ability to work outside in all weather conditions typical for Anchorage Alaska Summers and /or Winters.

Noise level:

  1. Quiet to moderate.

Physical requirements:

  1. Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.
  2. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
