Job Summary
The Title VI Indian Education Community Counselor contributes to creating culturally sustainable success for Native American students. This position provides academic guidance and collaborates with community organizations and Anchorage School District interdisciplinary teams to address the cultural and sociological learning factors that are important to successful education of Native American youth. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
 
Job Requirements
The following are required:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in social work, education, Indigenous studies, or a related field. Equivalent experience, education, and training may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
  2. Experience working with Native American communities; knowledge of Native American traditions, values, culture, and belief systems.
  3. Ability to communicate with Native American community members, including students, families, and social and tribal organizations.

The following are preferred:

  1. Four years of experience working with Alaska Native and American Indian youth and families in an educational setting.
  2. Ability to network with professionals involved in post-secondary education and employment agencies.
  3. Demonstrated effective and professional written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Knowledge of community resources and services to Native American families in Anchorage.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Assists families and students in transitioning from rural to urban Alaska and within ASD schools.
  2. Implements and maintains services in accordance with Title VI Indian Education Federal objectives and the Anchorage School District initiatives related to culturally sustaining education principles, improved attendance, and building strong educational foundations for Native American students.
  3. Recruits eligible Native American students and collects federal 506 enrollment forms for all Native students in the school.
  4. Guides Native American students in academics and assists them in making best use of resources to improve academic outcomes such as attendance, graduation rates, and access to college and career opportunities.
  5. Responds to parent, student, teacher, and staff requests for assistance with needs and services.
  6. Coordinates school events and meetings that contribute to culturally sustaining educational principles under the program objectives of the Title VI Indian Education Program.
  7. Consults and collaborates with community agencies, organizations, and Anchorage School District interdisciplinary teams to maximize educational and cultural opportunities for students and families.
  8. Maintains constant effective written and oral communication with students, parents/guardians, school staff and administration, and members of the community to address the needs of individual students and improve services and outcomes.
  9. Evaluates student records and assists with developing and implementing services that address social, academic, and cultural needs.
  10. Monitors grades, attendance, and credits regularly and consults and collaborates with teachers, counselors, and families.
  11. Collaborates with program coordinators and cultural experts in evaluating program effectiveness with periodical reports and data collection to support the objective of culturally sustaining education.
  12. Attends school events such as parent/teacher conferences and open house nights to promote the Title VI Indian Education program and provides services at school events.
  13. Attends assigned training and professional development as determined by Title VI Indian Education Program supervisors and the school district.
  14. Promotes, publicizes, and connects students to Native Education opportunities such as college/career readiness, culture nights, community events, credit recovery and homework help, and other enrichment opportunities for student outcomes.
  15. Maintains organization and completes projects and tasks in a timely manner.
