Job Title:           Fab Lab Instructor (I/II/III)

Department:     Youth Empowerment Services (YES)

Reports To:      Fab Lab Operations Supervisor

Supervises:      None

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt

Pay Grade:      N5 (I), N6 (II), N7 (III)

Job Type:        Regular, Full-Time

 

General Functions

The Fab Lab Instructor is responsible for learning and teaching the software, material, and equipment used in the Fab Lab. This position develops and implements Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)-enrichment modules in select schools and/or on-site in the Fab Lab,  plans and implements camp sessions, program implementation, and community STEM events.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Fab Lab Instructor, I

  • Serve as a mentor to participants and volunteers.
  • Implement culturally infused fabrication-based STEM-enrichment modules to classrooms/programs.
  • Provide after-school based instruction to youth. 
  • Participate in training.
  • Conduct Fab Lab tours.
  • Supervise youth whenever they are present in the Fab Lab-i.e. Fab Lab projects, camp sessions, and school break sessions.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed by all participants during in-school, after-school, and camp activities, including activities conducted on the CITC campus, during the transportation of youth to outside events and camps, and activities held offsite. 
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.  

Fab Lab Instructor, II

  • Perform all duties/responsibilities of a Fab Lab Instructor I with a high level of proficiency and responsibility.
  • Draft safety procedures and lab manuals and update as needed. 
  • Develop and document culturally infused, STEM-enrichment education modules (project-based Instructables). 
  • Organize STEM-enrichment camps and community STEM-events in coordination with others or individually.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with potential community partners.
  • Transport students, as needed, to class sites, on field trips, cultural/STEM camps, or other locations within the State of Alaska.
  • Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing data and information.  

Fab Lab Instructor, III

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of a Youth Advocate I and II with an advanced level of proficiency and responsibility.
  • Act as a resource, mentor, and trainer for all Fab Lab Instructors and Media Arts and Design (MAD) Coaches in the department.
    1. Orient new staff to the Fab Lab’s systems and processes.
    2. Train on equipment use and how to implement culturally infused STEM modules.
    3. Provide training and education to other employees as needed.
    4. Answer questions according to standard procedures and best practices.
  • Act as the Lead Fab Lab Instructor for the Fab Lab and YES Department, and work across programs to ensure consistent services are provided to youth and partners.
  • Make meaningful improvement to services, programs and processes, and organizational effectiveness that add value for participants and employees in the Fab Lab.
  • Assist with bridging the Fab Lab and YES Department with organizational wide STEM initiatives.

Job Specifications:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with and ability to become proficient in the CITC Fab Lab, safety rules, and project plans. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in fab lab software and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct on software and equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Fab Lab and CITC personnel policies. 
  • Ability to work both independently and as a contributory team member in a positive, productive manner. 
  • Ability to use sound judgment when interacting with staff and participants of various ages and backgrounds in a non-judgmental manner. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers, staff, youth participants, parents, and the general public. 
  • Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 
  • Perform under pressure with the ability to handle numerous priorities at the same time effectively. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native/American Indian community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of tools and equipment and tool safety.  
  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of technology and design software programs. 
  • Ability to travel to schools within the Anchorage School District and across the state of Alaska.
  • Ability to set up and take down mobile Fab Labs. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Fab Lab Instructor, I

  • High School Diploma or GED. 
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in working with youth.
  • Minimum of 2 years performing STEM-related activities, providing instruction or similar experience.
  • Basic knowledge of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to lift 30-50lbs regularly.
  • Continued employment will be contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory report from a state and federal background check.  

Fab Lab Instructor, II

  • Associates degree in education, STEM-related field, the arts, or related field. Year-for-year equivalent experience working in education, STEM-related field or the arts may be substituted.
  • Minimum 2 years experience working with youth.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with a variety of design software. 
  • Proficient knowledge or experience with some Fab Equipment or tools.
  • Ability to lift 30-50lbs regularly.
  • Valid Driver's License and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires drivers to be at least 21 years of age. 
  • Continued employment will be contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory report from a state and federal background check.  

Fab Lab Instructor, III

  • Bachelor's degree in education, STEM-related field, the arts, or related field.Year for year equivalent experience working in education, STEM-related field or the arts may be substituted.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with a variety of design software. 
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience working with youth.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with Alaska Native families, and knowledge of their values and belief systems.
  • Proficient on all Fab equipment and tools. 
  • Ability to lift 30-50lbs regularly.
  • Valid Driver's License and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires drivers to be at least 21 years of age. 
  • Continued employment will be contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory report from a state and federal background check. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years experience in working with Alaska Native/American Indian youth
  • Current First Aid and CPR
