JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title: Controller

Department: Finance (Accounting)

Reports To: Sr. Director of Accounting

Supervises: Assigned Finance Staff

FLSA Status: Exempt

Pay Grade: E8 

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

 

General Functions:

The Controller oversees the day-to-day operations of the Accounting Department. This position maintains the general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations and reviews, financial and ad-hoc reporting, overseeing data entry and budget maintenance, and conducting regular financial reviews with departments. The Controller closes month-end and internal financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide all accounting and reporting functions including monthly financial statements for management personnel as well as summarized financials, dashboards, and written narrative of variances for members of their Board.
  • Provide monthly financial statements for management personnel.
  • Maintain chart of accounts.
  • Ensure the proper tracking of grants in conjunction with the Grant Compliance Officer.
  • Compile annual budgets and support uploading into accounting software.
  • Monitor balance sheet activity and prepare reconciliations to thoroughly understand balances.
  • Prepare schedules and work papers for financial audits.
  • Oversee the coordination of audits.
  • Maintain client confidentiality.
  • Support quarterly and year-end tax filings.
  • Assist staff with inquires. 
  • Implement controls and procedures that support client operations and financial growth, sustainability, and compliance.
  • Provide regular supervision and leadership to assigned staff including recruiting, performance management and development, discipline, setting expectations and monitoring work.
  • Identify, recommend, and ensure implementation of accounting system improvements, migrations, and modifications.
  • Perform all related duties as assigned.

 

Job Specifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. 
  • Strong sense of organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop comprehensive work plans for short, mid-range, and long-term projects such as financial analysis for operating departments; for accounting and internal control considerations and the skills to manage such projects along with the demonstrated ability to perform many of the related project tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with department management and staff, and to effectively communicate with regulatory and taxing authorities.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with a particular emphasis on the presentation of financial material.
  • Financial and audit skills commensurate with a corporation the size and functional orientation of CITC and its affiliates.
  • Self-starter, requiring minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Finance with an emphasis on Accounting, or related field. Relevant experience may substitute degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. 
  • Four years of demonstrated progressively responsible accounting experience including experience in a leadership role.
  • Two years of experience with complex consolidated financial statement preparation, including all statements, footnotes, and management discussion and analysis.
  • Two years of experience preparing and analyzing operating, capital, and cash flow proformas and budgets.
  • Three years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License and be insurable under CITC’s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion and receipt of a satisfactory state and federal background check.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA/CMA designation.
  • Public accounting experience.
