JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title:          Family Services Worker

Department:    Child & Family Services Department (CFSD)

Reports to:      Program Manager

Supervises:     None

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt

Pay Grade:      N6

Job Type:        Regular, Full-Time

 

General Functions:

The Family Services Worker (FSW) is responsible for providing direct case management, crisis intervention and skill development services to AN/AI families exposed to violence and trauma in multiple settings from a strength-based, family-centered, and solution-focused approach to shared participants of the Office of Children’s Services. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Assess participants by conducting biopsychosocial assessments.
  • Determine need for protective action by regular assessment and monitoring of family safety. 
  • Develop Family Service Plans by identifying appropriate goals and objectives. Determine pertinent resources, strategies, and interventions to promote growth and change.   Monitor progress towards goals and objectives by reviewing and adjusting services provided in concert with participants and         providers.
  • Provide teaching and modeling of skills intended to promote overall family functioning.
  • Provide crisis intervention and emotional support. Implement strategies to engage non-participating or hostile family members.
  • Facilitate access to services and resources by initiating referrals to providers through individual and system advocacy.
  • Assure quality services for participants by engaging in identified standards of practice; by promoting effective communication with other service providers through multidisciplinary team meetings and case staffing to ensure that services are appropriate and non-duplicative.
  • Maintain agency and project credibility by establishing working relationships with consortium partners, advisory and related service agencies.
  • Promote the agency and project by demonstrating a functional understanding of program services available for participants; by adhering to professional code of ethics.
  • Maintain operations by following policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops and mandatory trainings; by reviewing profession publications; by establishing networks of community resources.
  • Comply with federal, state and local legal requirements by studying existing and new child welfare legislation including ICWA; by enforcing adherence to requirements including mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect; by advising management on needed actions.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform all other related job duties as assigned.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, assessment, evaluation, plan implementation and documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish trust with families experiencing stress and/or crisis.
  • Willingness to work with participants in various settings (home, community, office). 
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple activities with limited supervision.
  • Ability to exercise independent and analytical judgment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child welfare and related systems.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and flexible schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an active participant in a team environment. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in word processing, spread sheets, databases, internet and e-mail.

 

Minimum Core Competencies:

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree in psychology, social work, or related social services. Relevant experience may substitute for degree requirements on a year for year basis.
  • One year of full proficiency in service delivery in all aspects of human services, especially home- based services; working knowledge of dynamics of human behavior of individuals and groups.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native families, knowledge of their values and belief systems, and working knowledge of historical and contemporary social, economic and cultural problems of the specified geographical area.
  • Continued employment status will be contingent upon satisfactory completion of a state and federal criminal background check.
  • Valid Alaska Drivers License and insurable under respective ANFP partner agency automotive insurance.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for degree on a 

               year for year basis.

  • Experience working in a non-profit or social services setting.
