Location: Nenana, Alaska

Supervisor: Tribal Administrator

Status: Position is funded by an Indian Office of Education grant. It may last up to 5 years [in year 1 the position is half time (20 hours a week) and in subsequent years (years 2-5), the position will be full time (40 hours a week)].

Pay Rate: $25/hr

 

Job Summary

The Afterschool Coordinator is expected to coordinate, oversee & manage afterschool or “out-of-school” activities for Nenana’s youth.

Job Description

  • Work with the Tribal Administrator, Transition Coordinator, assigned grant evaluator, Nenana youth, and other stakeholders listed in this posting to coordinate after school activities.
  • Report to the Tribal Administrator regularly, Nenana School Board regularly & Nenana Native Council monthly.
  • Once activities are narrowed down through community input, the After School Coordinator is expected to identify and recruit instructors for the cultural activities. 
  • Work directly with the identified instructors to make sure that they have appropriate skills, and will need to supervise the instructors when they are teaching the youth. 
    • Ensure the safety of the youth who participate in the After-School Programs. 
  • After School Coordinator may need to engage with appropriate tribal elders as needed.  
  • Please note that this is a paid position, run through the Nenana Native Council. Therefore, employment policy of the Nenana Native Council applies to this job. Please note that there are no retirement benefits available. The funding for this position is through a federal award from the Office of Indian Education, the Demonstration Grant, Accessing Choices in Education (ACE).

 

Requirements

  • Pass a Criminal Background Check
  • Pass a pre-employment (& any other required) drug testing
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License
  • Clean Driving Record

 

Main Qualifications

  • Be familiar with the Village and community of Nenana. This will help greatly in meeting grant goals. Applicant is expected to have Alaska Native cultural knowledge. 
  • This position primarily involves working with our youth in Nenana, so the applicant must have the ability to be a good example to youth.
  • Know how to put together and disseminate surveys; and hold focus groups (even virtually) on a community wide level, when needed. 
  • Applicant should be a great communicator (e.g, have positive relationships with various community stakeholders such as our school board, council members, our parents, our youth, Tanana Chiefs Conference, other educational institutions etc). 
  • Excellent Planning, Coordinating & Networking skills are necessary.   
  • Data collection and organization skills are necessary. Data must be tracked, recorded, and turned in on a regular basis. 
  • Consistency with reliably being able to meet deadlines.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • College graduate
    • Due to the paperwork, organization and coordination skills needed.
  • Previous experience working under a grant funded program.
  • Certified Teacher is a plus
    • To assist youth with academic issues in the program.
