Assistant Professor of Biology
University of Alaska
Assistant Professor of Biology
University of Alaska Southeast
We invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position, Assistant Professor in Biology, to begin August 2027 in the Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS). We seek a colleague who will teach across our undergraduate Marine Biology, Biology, and Fisheries programs, build an externally funded research program that engages undergraduates, and help extend our department's strength in marine biology. Juneau's coastal rainforest and marine setting offer exceptional opportunities for field-based teaching and research. Applications must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Marine Biology, Evolution, Genetics, or a related field. The successful candidate will be expected to teach lower and upper division courses in biology and marine biology, and develop a robust externally-funded research program involving undergraduate students.
UAS is a small liberal arts university and is a federally recognized Alaska Native-serving institution. The campus resides on the unceded territory of the Áakʼw Ḵwáan on Lingít Aaní, also known as Juneau and Douglas, Alaska, which also houses neighboring X̱aadas and Ts'msyen peoples. The UAS Juneau campus sits 12 miles north of downtown, with a scenic backdrop that overlooks Auke Bay on one side and Auke Lake and Áakʼw Tʼáak Sítʼ (Mendenhall Glacier) on the other. Juneau, Alaska's picturesque capital city (population 32,000), offers a mild maritime climate, exceptional outdoor recreation, and a lively arts community. For additional information about UAS, please visit our website at http://www.uas.alaska.edu.
Our academic programs take full advantage of the relatively pristine natural environments surrounding campus, and biology facilities include a flow-through seawater system, a SCUBA dive locker, and dedicated teaching and research laboratories. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in genetics, evolution, or conservation biology (however, other fields may be considered). We are particularly interested in candidates whose research would take advantage of or have relevance to the diverse coastal ecosystems of Southeast Alaska.
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in Biology, Marine Biology, Evolution, Genetics, or related field. Candidates with all but dissertation (ABD) at time of application may be considered with the requirement that the Ph.D. defense be scheduled before starting the position.
Application must include the following:
1. Cover letter of application
2. Curriculum Vitae
3. Statement of teaching philosophy
4. Statement of research experience and future plans
5. Copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts. Unofficial copies are acceptable at the time of application; official transcripts will be required from the successful candidate.
