Job Summary: Job incumbent prepares and dispenses medications following prescriptions issued by authorized medical practitioners. Incumbent performs a variety of tasks to fulfill the department's patient care and service functions.

Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Pharmacy Services, job incumbent:

1. Reviews medication orders to assure appropriate drug therapy, including, but not limited to, evaluation of: drug interactions, drug allergies, and monitoring parameters with subsequent computer entry/verification of the order.

2. Verifies and/or enters patient allergies into computer system.

3. Verifies that patients understand their medications through various modalities of patient education.

4. Participates in management of drug therapy for selected patients utilizing Board of Pharmacy approved Pharmacy Practice agreements. Provides drug information, drug therapy consultation and staff education relating to drug therapy.

5. Provides health promotion and disease prevention activities relating to drug use and preventative drug therapy.

6. Assures availability, preparation and control of medication.

7. Advises clinical staff on appropriate patient treatment. Consults with other pharmacists or medical staff relating to patient treatment as necessary.

Other Responsibilities:

8. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor of Science or Pharm D degree.

2. State of Alaska licensure as a Registered Pharmacist.

3. Pharmaceutical procurement experience preferred.

4. Knowledge of RPMS or pharmacy computer system with the ability to type minimum of 25 w.p.m.

5. Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and analytical skills.

6. Must maintain strict confidentiality.

Supervision: This position normally does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Physical demands: Work required standing walking, pushing, bending, and lifting equipment and supplies. Job incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to thirty pounds. Incumbent must be able to work accurately and efficiently in a busy and often stressful environment. Incumbent may work evening clinics on rotating schedule.

Work Environment: Work is primarily in a clinical setting. There is common exposure to contagious diseases and infections. Some degree of risk is also present in working with intoxicated or disturbed individuals.

Summation: Assignments of a professional nature are generally given in terms of objectives, priorities and deadlines. Incumbent is expected to seek assistance in applying local policies and procedures and in unusual situations when necessary. Incumbent exercises independent judgment to accomplish a variety of professional tasks utilizing established guidelines. Completed work is evaluated for technical soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to professional standards and I.H.S. requirements. Incumbent must interact with other staff, private clinics, and hospital staff. Patients served are Alaska Natives, so cultural sensitivity should be exercised.
