Job Summary: The incumbent's primary responsibilities are to provide technical support for the Tanana Chiefs Conference's biological studies on the Henshaw Creek, a tributary of the Koyukuk River. The incumbent will assist with setup, operations, and shutdown of the Henshaw Creek weir, as well as assisting with resource management duties related to the conservation and management of other resident fish species located in the Henshaw Creek. This position requires extensive time at a remote field camp between mid-June and mid-August (up to 8 weeks).

Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.

Essential Functions: This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbent(s).

Representative Duties: Under general supervision of the Fisheries Biologist the incumbent will:

1. Receive training and certification in motorboat operations, first aid, CPR, bear awareness, and firearms safety.

2. Complete logistical and procurement preparations for an extended timeframe in a remote research field camp.

3. Construct a resistance board weir in the Henshaw Creek.

4. Visually count migrating salmon and determine estimates of daily escapement counts. Collect biological information including age, sex, and length of salmon.

5. Collect environmental data.

6. Record and disseminate daily biological and environmental data.

7. Operate jet boats and motors, all-terrain vehicles, and chainsaws in the performance of job duties.

8. Breakdown and storage of remote research field camp.

9. Conduct data analyses and some report writing.

Other Responsibilities:

10. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

2. Genuine interest in sustainable salmon fisheries.

3. Ability to work and live in remote field camp environments.

4. Attention to detail, and the ability to collect, record, analyze, and disseminate accurate and timely data.

5. Ability to operate boats, motors, chainsaws, and all-terrain vehicles.

6. Ability to practice safe camp operations.

7. Ability to work in water and maneuver with waders, nets, and sampling gear.

8. Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Good verbal, written, interpersonal, and analytical communication skills.

2. Strong observation and documentation skills.

3. Ability to follow project operation plans.

4. Good arithmetic skills are needed to add, subtract, multiply, divide, determine percentages, and extrapolate escapement numbers.

Supervision: This is not a supervisory position.

Physical demands: Job incumbent must be able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds in support of equipment and supplies. Position requires recurring bending, stooping, hearing, handling, considerable walking and standing. Conditions include but are not limited to remote field camp environment, long working hours, sometimes adverse weather conditions, and travel by small aircraft, jet boat, and all-terrain vehicles. Positions requires incumbent to be able to work on a flexible schedule, which may include days, evenings, or nights.

Summation: Analytical ability is needed for problem solving situations related to equipment, weather, water fluctuation, etc. Good communication skills and attention to detail are required to ensure data is accurately collected, and transferred correctly from field notes to prepared reports and management agencies. Strong interpersonal skills are needed to get along with other staff while in remote field camp for 6-8 weeks at a time.
