Associate Satellite Products Analyst & Trainer (Weather and Hazards) - GINA

University of Alaska Fairbanks

The Geographic Information Network of Alaska (GINA) is hiring an Associate Satellite Products Analyst & Trainer (Weather and Hazards) to support near-real-time satellite operations. GINA downlinks, processes, and distributes polar-orbiting satellite data around the clock to government agencies, university researchers, and communities across Alaska. This role is ideal for early-career meteorologists or atmospheric scientists seeking hands-on experience with operational satellite products for weather and hazard monitoring. You will work directly with the National Weather Service, Alaska Fire Service, Alaska Volcano Observatory, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite product developers to evaluate product performance, gather user feedback, and improve how satellite products are integrated into operations. The position includes learning AWIPS (Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System), advancing Python skills to assess product quality, helping develop training materials, and presenting at conferences. Working within an interdisciplinary team, this position builds practical technical skills while directly supporting weather forecasting and hazard monitoring across Alaska-making a tangible difference for everyday Alaskans.

This position also includes outreach and satellite-product training, requiring candidates to engage audiences through small group discussions and larger presentations.
