Comptroller/CFO

AVCP RHA


Under direct supervision of the CEO, the CFO/Comptroller oversees the day-to-day operations of AVCP RHA’s accounting and finance departments including payroll, accounts payable, account receivable and tenant accounting.  A majority of AVCP RHA’s annual revenue funding comes from a NAHASDA grant and major programs include Development (new construction), and Housing Management, for rental and home buyer programs. 

 

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Five years’ progressive experience in the field, including supervision.
  • Experience in nonprofit Tribal Organizations, Tribal Self-Governance and NAHASDA is strongly preferred.
  • A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred. 
  • Relevant experience may be substituted for education and certifications

Successful comptrollers possess a blend of financial knowledge with leadership and management qualities. 

Technical skills

  • Financial management and analysis: Expertise in evaluating financial performance, interpreting financial statements, and understanding capital budgeting.
  • Audit planning and management: In-depth knowledge of auditing principles and practices.

Technical skills

  • Proficiency with accounting software (such as QuickBooks, AccuFund ect..) and financial management systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions like pivot tables and VLOOKUP.
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP, GASB and relevant government accounting standards. 

Soft skills

  • Leadership: Ability to manage and direct staff, coordinate tasks, and provide professional development.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present financial information to stakeholders, including employees, executives, and the public.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving: Strong analytical skills for financial analysis and addressing complex business issues.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous approach to accuracy and compliance in all financial reporting.
  • Integrity: High ethical standards to ensure the proper and secure use of company or public funds. 

 

Job Duties

A comptroller's core duties involve managing accounting operations, financial reporting, and monitoring the organization's fiscal health. 

  • Directs and supervises the finance and accounting functions, including payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Performs timely and accurate reconciliations of general ledger accounts, including but not limited to bank reconciliations, AR, AP, payroll, unbilled receivables, advances, intercompany transactions, and construction in progress.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes by preparing schedules and reconciliation reports.
  • Helps with budget development, monitors spending, and prepares revenue and expenditure forecasts.
  • Manages internal and external audits, designs and monitors internal control systems to prevent fraud, and ensures financial compliance.
  • Provides financial information and analysis to support strategic decision-making and planning.
  • Assists with daily cash flow, debt management, and investments.
