What can you expect?

As the Driller, you will work onsite in Alaska performing specialized rock drilling activities in support of STG construction projects throughout rural Alaska. You will be responsible for operating and maintaining drilling equipment to bore holes for construction-related purposes, including foundation work, anchoring, grouting, and preparation for blasting operations performed by authorized personnel. You will apply technical expertise, sound judgment, and coordination with field leadership and other trades to ensure drilling activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and company policies.

 

How will you do it?

  • Perform drilling work for extended periods to support project completion.
  • Work closely with a variety of other trades to coordinate drilling activities with overall project needs.
  • Follow directions from supervisors and senior personnel while demonstrating initiative and maintaining productivity on the jobsite.
  • Drill or bore holes in rock for construction purposes, including grouting, anchoring, foundation work, and preparation for blasting.
  • Select, install, and change drill bits and drill rods as required based on hole depth and material conditions.
  • Operate and control drilling equipment, including stabilizing, positioning, and aligning drills.
  • Adjust air pressure, rotary speed, and downward pressure according to material being drilled.
  • Operate equipment to flush cuttings from holes and control dust.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on drilling equipment, including lubrication and replacement of parts.
  • Apply a versatile construction skill set to assist other trades as needed to meet project demands.
  • Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Conduct oneself in the best interest of the Company while on the job or representing STG.
  • Promptly report incidents, unsafe conditions, or activities that may impact safety, ethics, or company operations.
  • Act as a team member and mentor less experienced laborers when appropriate.
  • Complete and submit required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Share responsibility for cooking, cleaning, and general upkeep of field quarters when required.
  • Maintain required certifications mandated by law or company policy.
  • Perform physical labor that requires considerable use of one’s arms and legs and moving your whole body such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials at construction sites.
  • Participate in training and professional development activities.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Functions:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of drilling methods, materials, terminology, and standard heavy construction practices.
  • Knowledge of drill setup, alignment, and hole layout in accordance with project plans and specifications.
  • Proficiency in the safe operation, inspection, and basic maintenance of drilling equipment, compressors, and related support equipment.
  • Skilled in selecting, installing, and changing drill bits and rods based on material conditions, hole depth, and project requirements.
  • Ability to regulate air pressure, rotary speed, and downward pressure to achieve accurate and efficient drilling results.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, safety rules, regulations, and technical documents.
  • Basic math skills sufficient to calculate hole depth, spacing, measurements, and related material quantities accurately.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet production schedules.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, follow direction from supervisors, and coordinate work with other trades.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, coworkers, and other trades to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Ability to identify jobsite hazards, follow safety procedures, and consistently use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, self-motivation, and ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to maintain quality workmanship and attention to detail to ensure work meets plans, specifications, and company standards.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, tasks, and project conditions while maintaining productivity.
  • Ability to travel to rural worksites up to 100% of the time and remain on rotation for extended assignments.
  • Ability to live and work cooperatively with coworkers in close quarters and maintain positive morale in camp-style environments.
  • Ability to maintain any required certifications or training mandated by law or Company policy.
  • Ability to participate effectively in group meetings, safety briefings, and training sessions.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including extended hours, weekends, and holidays as required by project needs

 

Who is STG Inc. looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Five (5) or more years of drilling or related construction experience required.
  • Ability to pass a drug, driving (if applicable) and background screenings.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting drilling operations in rural or Arctic environments is preferred.
  • Prior experience in Alaska’s rural construction industry is preferred.
  • Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Company’s Driving Policy preferred.

 

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is primarily performed at outdoor construction sites in rural Alaska and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, and heavy equipment. STG has a fast-paced multi-tasking office environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. At times, work is performed outside of the office at indoor and outdoor job sites. Adaptability regarding schedule and design changes, and occasional overtime for immediate field support or bid processing may be necessary.
