Job Title: Diagnostic Radiology Technologist 

Incumbent performs routine radiographic images, patient data management, and patient reception work as needed in an outpatient clinic setting operating 7 days a week.   Will perform routine tasks according to standard procedures and instructions.  Operates direct capture radiographic unit and may be required to travel and provide expertise and basic radiology training to off-site personnel utilizing portable imaging equipment.

Representative Duties: Under direct supervision of the Radiology Director job incumbent:

Operates fixed and portable radiographic equipment utilizing digital direct capture (DR) and computerized radiography (CR). 

Utilizes Radiology Information Systems, PACs, or other image acquisition systems. 

Receives patients, explains methods of procedures, positions patient, selects and sets technical exposure factors.

Effectively practices and ensures radiation protection using As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) concepts. 

Advises radiologists of examinations progress and notifies radiologists of significant images requiring their immediate attention. 

Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patent priorities to accommodate them. 

Maintains Radiographic Suites in a clean and sanitary condition, and maintains supplies and reorders when necessary. 

May be called back to duty under emergent or special need situations. 

Incumbent is subject to irregular tours of duty when patient care, scheduling and/or patient convenience necessitates coverage outside of normal hours or operation.

Advises health care provider staff on radiology technique and appropriateness of exams.

Occasionally trains off-site limited radiographers on appropriate imaging procedures.

Serves as liaison between health care providers, radiologists, and patients. 

Performs quality control procedures according to department policies.

Adheres to all local, state, and federal laws governing use of radiographic equipment.

Field/village travel may be required in order to provide radiology guidance to outlying clinics.

Responsible for packing and transportation of field/village travel gear as required for village trips.

Operates dexascan unit and assists other areas/modalities as required.   

Other Responsibilities:

Performs other job related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

Certification must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R); or be able to achieve certification within three (3) months of employment. 

Experience or Education.  Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines.

Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed.

Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results.

Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist or health care team informed.

Skill in using tact, diplomacy and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers.

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual  images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.

Supervision:   This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical demands: Position requires long periods of sitting, standing, recurring bending, stooping, crouching, stretching, and reaching. Job incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in support of equipment/other. Patients may be required to be lifted bodily from time to time.   This position requires the incumbent's physical presence at a clinic (TCC, Hospital, or field) for an average of 8 to 10 hours depending on the circumstance.  Overtime will occasionally be required.

Summation:  Incumbent must work as a cooperative and successful member of the radiology team.
