What can you expect?
As the Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will work onsite in Anchorage, AK with travel to project sites and Company yards as required and will be responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of heavy construction equipment, as well as light and medium-duty vehicles, to support company operations. This role ensures equipment is safe, reliable, and operating efficiently in remote and extreme Alaskan environments. You will work independently and as part of a team to minimize downtime, support field operations, and maintain compliance with safety and maintenance standards.
How will you do it?
- Troubleshoot and inspect equipment to diagnose malfunctions, including evaluating the extent of all equipment repairs and determining the level of action required, and communicating required repairs and recommended level of action to the Equipment Manager.
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy construction vehicles and equipment, including crawler cranes, skid steers, excavators, drills, dozers, hammers, backhoes, loaders, tractors, and other heavy equipment.
- Adjust, repair, or overhaul engines and major components, including fuel, hydraulic, electrical, cooling, and braking systems.
- Operate hoists, lifts, overhead cranes, hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments to safely and effectively perform mechanical work.
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and Company standards.
- Perform routine welding and fabrication work on heavy equipment as required to support repairs and modifications.
- Maintain accurate service logs, maintenance records, and inspection documentation using paper files and electronic maintenance software; submit all required documentation timely to the Equipment Manager and Accounting.
- Clean, maintain, and organize equipment, tools, and the general work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
- Maintain inventory of tools, parts, supplies, and equipment; notify management of shortages or replacement needs.
- Provide instruction, guidance, and on-the-job training to other staff on proper equipment operation, repair methods, inspections, and preventive maintenance practices.
- Follow direction from the Project Foreman, Equipment Manager, and senior personnel, while exercising initiative to remain productive and responsive to operational needs at all times while on the jobsite.
- Comply with Company policies and procedures related to purchasing, ordering, and receiving parts, tools, and supplies.
- Perform mechanical trade work for extended hours, including consecutive days, often in adverse weather, remote locations, and physically demanding conditions, to support project requirements.
- Work closely and cooperatively with a variety of other trades and project personnel to support overall site operations.
- Perform shared cooking, cleaning, and camp maintenance responsibilities as required in remote field quarters.
- Report any incident, unsafe condition, equipment failure, or activity that may affect the Company’s ability to operate safely, ethically, or profitably to the Company Safety Manager or appropriate supervisor.
- Safely operate Company vehicles and equipment in compliance with Company policies, site rules, and applicable regulations.
- Comply with all safety, environmental, and health regulations, including participation in safety meetings, inspections, and job hazard analyses.
- Support emergency repairs and mobilizations as required to minimize equipment downtime and maintain operational continuity.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Functions:
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, maintenance procedures, and processes.
- Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance and repair.
- Working knowledge of manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools used for equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, powertrain components, and computerized engine controls.
- Ability to diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical failures using diagnostic software, testing equipment, and systematic troubleshooting techniques.
- Knowledge of jobsite safety requirements, including lockout/tagout procedures, hazard identification, and safe work practice.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and the ability to identify early indicators of equipment failure.
- All-around knowledge of materials, terms, and practices in the construction field.
- Skill in working with a wide variety of heavy equipment, as well as smaller company vehicles, in extreme Alaskan conditions.
- Skill in operating a computer, utilizing a variety of applicable software programs.
- Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection logs, and service documentation in accordance with Company and regulatory requirements.
- Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines, and general time management.
- Ability to provide tools to complete duties.
- Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), high degree of attention to details, follow work rules, and adhere to project schedule, all in a respectful and supportive manner.
- Ability to use a laptop computer and knowledge of standard business applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to work productively under pressure.
- Ability to safely and efficiently operate heavy construction equipment and other motor vehicles.
- Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, and other technical documents.
- Ability to travel to remote locations for work-related purposes (up to 50% of time).
- Ability to work safely in extreme weather conditions, uneven terrain, confined spaces, and physically demanding environments.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, 10 or more hours per day, and up to 7 days per week.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to live and work with co-workers in close quarters and keep good morale.
- Ability to participate in group meetings.
- Ability to conduct oneself in the best interest of the Company while on the job or representing STG.
- Ability to maintain any required certifications mandatory by law or company policy.
Who is STG Inc. looking for?
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of four (4) years of hands-on experience in heavy equipment repair and maintenance required.
- Must provide and maintain a personal set of tools necessary to safely and effectively perform job duties and responsibilities.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Company’s Driving Policy.
- Current DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Medical Card) required.
- Willingness to maintain required licenses, certifications, and training in accordance with Company policy and regulatory requirements.
- Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Company’s Driving Policy.
- Ability to pass a drug, driving record and background screenings.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education or vocational/technical training in Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Diesel Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Prior experience supporting construction operations in rural or remote Alaska preferred.
- Class A CDL preferred.
- Prior welding and fabrication experience preferred.
Working Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. STG Inc has a fast-paced multi-tasking work environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. At times, work is performed outside of the office at indoor and outdoor job sites. Adaptability regarding schedule and design changes, and occasional overtime for immediate field support or bid processing may be necessary. The employee must be flexible regarding last-minute requests for project support and varying workloads.
