Job Summary

Job incumbent provides ambulatory medical care under the supervision of a physician or physician assistant.  Takes clients chief complaint, vital signs and prepare patient for exam.  Assist medical provider or with diagnostic procedures, treatments, and provide client with education.

Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Community Health Nursing/Clinic Nursing Director  job incumbent:

Provide assessment of all patients in an ambulatory clinic.

Takes brief history of past or present complaints

Vitals and measurements are taken as appropriate.

Explain treatment procedures to patients.

Prepares necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies, as needed.

Assist physician during the exam.

Reinforces physicians instructions to patient and provide education to patients as needed.

Performs indicated screening tests and lab work-up, as requested by medical provider.

Collect and prepare laboratory specimens.

Fills and completes lab and x-ray requests and other forms.Administers treatments as directed by Physician. Preparing and administering of medications.

Taking electrocardiograms.

Removing sutures and change dressings.

Reviews patients electronic health record for health maintenance needs and disease prevention requirements such as immunizations, pap smears, physicals, mammograms, rectal swabs, smoking, alcohol, and recreation activity.Answer/reviews telephone calls, transfers and/or takes messages and refer to appropriate individuals.Stock exams rooms with supplies.Communicates with all of TCC/CAIHC staff to ensure patients receive coordinated care.Participates in Quality Assurance and Improvement activities.Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Current Certified Medical Assistant certification.

Current BLS and CPR certification.

One year of clinical experience.

Medical office experience preferred.

Previous experience working in Rural Alaska or providing medical care to Alaska Natives preferred.

Familiarity with medical terminology.

Must maintain strict confidentiality.

Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proficiency with typing, using Office computer (MS Office Suite) and clinical computer applications (RPMS).

Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

SupervisionThis position has no supervisory responsibilities

Physical demands: Employee is able to lift, carry and handle equipment needed for medical procedures.  Will spend most of time walking, sitting and standing to complete tasks.  Will read medical providers instruction for clients

Summation:  Position requires the ability to adapt and communicate standards of medical care and the knowledge of disease and treatment to individual patients situations.  Position requires understanding medical and social services and their limitations and planning for the optimal outcome under any given circumstance.
