The Toolik Field Station (TFS) at the Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB) is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced EMT and Station Safety Coordinator. TFS is a world-renowned Arctic field station located 360 road miles north of Fairbanks on the rural Dalton Highway. The remote station supports researchers, students, and others from around the world. The population of the station can vary from 3 in the winter months to 150 residents in the summer (over 400 different individuals annually) and is open 365 days a year.

 

This position oversees one seasonal EMT/Safety Coordinator during the summer season (May-September). Reports to and coordinates with the TFS Facility Supervisor. Train seasonal and full-time staff. Develops Toolik Field Station safety program and policies. This position requires residence at TFS one-half to three-quarters time from April through September and half time from October through March. During the summer, the position rotates schedule with the seasonal EMT/Safety Coordinator.

 

TFS will consider training the right candidate in different aspects of the position, including Wilderness First Responder certification, hazardous materials management and EMT I/II certificationKnowledge of emergency first response, hazardous materials operations for first responders, hazardous material storage and transportation regulations, safety inspections, emergency pre-plans, field safety and first aid instructional methods are required for this position.

 

The successful candidate will work independently as well as with a wide variety of faculty, staff and students; working in adverse weather conditions while performing tasks accurately.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Bachelor's degree in environmental science, occupational health & safety, industrial hygiene, or other related field, and two years progressively responsible relevant experience (i.e. environmental health & safety), or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

 

EMT I or higher emergency medical certification (or the ability to obtain EMT II certification within a short period of time)

At least 3 years of providing medical or emergency services.

Valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria

Driving in extreme conditions: 4x4, remote roads, dirt, snow/ice

 

Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy for patients and TFS users. Must have appropriate "bedside manner" and be approachable and personable with the TFS community.

 

Aptitudes required for work of this nature are good physical stamina, endurance, and body condition that would not be adversely affected by frequently having to walk, stand, lift, carry, and balance at times, in excess of 125 pounds. Motor coordination is necessary because over uneven terrain, the patient's, the Paramedic's, and other workers' well-being must not be jeopardized.

 

Must be able to work at heights (tower climbing).

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

EMT II certification

Advance Emergency Medical Technician

It is preferred that applicants have experience as an instructor of CPR and first aid, in operation trucks and off-road vehicles, wilderness EMT or FR certification and hazardous material certifications, but they are not required for this position. TFS will consider training the right candidate in different aspects of the position, including Wilderness First Responder certification, hazardous materials management, and EMT II certification

This position starts on the Troth Yeddah campus in Fairbanks and is located at Toolik Field Station. On-site work arrangements may be considered in accordance with UA regulations.
