This position has defined working dates of August 1st - May 31st. 

 

General Functions:

The Reading Advocate collaborates with classroom teachers, intervention teams, and families to design and deliver individualized and small-group literacy interventions that improve students' reading fluency, comprehension, and overall literacy skills. This position works with a multidisciplinary team to foster partnership between family and school while providing regular student contact, educational resources, academic assistance, enrichment activities, and referrals for educational services. Working in partnership with our people, the Reading Advocate helps develop opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by promoting educational success and literacy achievement for Alaska Native and American Indian youth.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess student reading levels using diagnostic tools and progress monitoring systems to inform instructional planning.
  • Provide direct literacy instruction to students in one-on-one or small group settings, addressing individual learning needs.
  • Develop individualized reading plans and monitor student progress regularly to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with teachers and supervisor to plan and implement literacy interventions aligned with classroom instruction.
  • Participate in data meetings and provide input on student performance, progress, and instructional strategies.
  • Support the implementation of school-wide literacy initiatives and evidence-based intervention programs.
  • Prepare instructional materials and resources under teacher or supervisor direction to support literacy development.
  • Assist students with remedial work, provide tutoring services, and monitor ongoing student progress toward literacy goals.
  • Provide instructional support in media centers, libraries, and computer labs when necessary.
  • Assist with classroom management and support students with disabilities during the school day as assigned.
  • Supervise students in various school settings including buses, lunchroom, gym, hallways, and other areas as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, students, staff, and community members regarding student progress and literacy development.
  • Conduct parent involvement activities to engage families in supporting student literacy at home.
  • Participate in the preparation and delivery of culturally based activities and literacy programs throughout the year.
  • Report accidents, destruction of property, abusive behavior, bullying, and assaults to appropriate personnel.
  • Attend professional development training related to literacy instruction, intervention strategies, and culturally responsive education.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Adhere to all CITC and Anchorage School District policies and regulations.
  • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

  • Demonstrated ability to compile and summarize data in spreadsheet, database, and word processing formats.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with educational and social services resources available to students and families.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community services, CITC services, and Anchorage School District services with ability to serve as a referral agent.
  • Knowledge of Alaska Native and American Indian educational issues and unique and specialized needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • Associate degree in Education, Reading, Literacy, Counseling, or related field. Relevant work experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Three (3) years of experience working with Alaska Native families with knowledge of their values and belief systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in literacy intervention, tutoring, or reading specialist roles.
  • Training or certification in evidence-based literacy intervention programs.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • May require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and consistently working on a computer with repetitive motion.
  • The need to occasionally move around the office to access filing cabinets, storage cabinets, and office equipment may be necessary.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
