General Functions:

The Family Services Worker is responsible for providing direct case management, crisis intervention, and skill development services to Alaska Native and American Indian families exposed to violence and trauma in multiple settings. This position utilizes a strength-based, family-centered, and solution-focused approach while conducting biopsychosocial assessments, developing Family Service Plans, and providing crisis intervention and emotional support. Working in partnership with our people, the Family Services Worker develops opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by facilitating access to services and resources, promoting family functioning, and supporting families through comprehensive case management and advocacy. The role requires expertise in child welfare systems, strong assessment abilities, and commitment to maintaining family safety while supporting growth and positive change through culturally responsive interventions.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess participants by conducting comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to identify strengths, needs, and appropriate interventions.
  • Determine need for protective action by conducting regular assessment and monitoring of family safety while implementing appropriate safety planning strategies.
  • Develop Family Service Plans by identifying appropriate goals and objectives while determining pertinent resources, strategies, and interventions to promote growth and change.
  • Monitor progress towards goals and objectives by reviewing and adjusting services provided in collaboration with participants and service providers.
  • Provide teaching and modeling of skills intended to promote overall family functioning while utilizing culturally appropriate interventions and approaches.
  • Provide crisis intervention and emotional support while implementing strategies to engage non-participating or hostile family members effectively.
  • Facilitate access to services and resources by initiating referrals to providers through individual and system advocacy efforts.
  • Assure quality services for participants by engaging in identified standards of practice and promoting effective communication with service providers.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case staffing to ensure services are appropriate, non-duplicative, and coordinated effectively.
  • Maintain agency and project credibility by establishing working relationships with consortium partners, advisory committees, and related service agencies.
  • Promote the agency and project by demonstrating functional understanding of program services while adhering to professional codes of ethics.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, mandatory trainings, and reviewing professional publications.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements including ICWA, mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect, and other child welfare legislation.
  • Maintain operations by following established policies and procedures while maintaining strict confidentiality according to regulations and requirements.
  • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

Job Specifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, assessment, evaluation, plan implementation, and documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish trust with families experiencing stress and crisis while working in various settings including home, community, and office.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to coordinate multiple activities with limited supervision and exercise independent analytical judgment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child welfare and related systems with strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work evenings and flexible schedules while functioning as an active participant in team environments.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet research, and email communication systems.
  • Knowledge of dynamics of human behavior of individuals and groups with expertise in home-based service delivery models.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related social services field. Relevant experience may substitute for education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • One (1) year of experience in service delivery in human services, especially home-based services, with working knowledge of human behavior dynamics.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native families with knowledge of their values and belief systems and understanding of historical and contemporary social, economic, and cultural issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related field. Relevant experience may substitute for education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years.
  • Experience working in non-profit or social service settings with Alaska Native and American Indian populations.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • May require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and consistently working on a computer with repetitive motion.
  • The need to occasionally move around the office to access filing cabinets, storage cabinets, and office equipment may be necessary.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
