POSITION DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time, exempt position with an office location in the Anchorage area, reporting to the Tribal Council.

GENERAL FUNCTION: The Tribal Administrator is responsible for planning, monitoring, organizing, coordinating, and directing all activities under the supervisory control of the Tribal Council. Work requires the exercise of mature judgment and the practices of sound management techniques and practices in a wide variety of administrative and related areas, with professional and friendly disposition.

The Tribal Administrator will act in the best interests of the Tribe by protecting our community’s cultural integrity; promote social and economic well-being and to further its political interests. To act in accordance with all applicable federal laws that do not restrict the tenets or practices of tribal sovereignty.

Unless otherwise specified by the Council, the duties and responsibilities of the Tribal Administrator shall include, but is not limited to, the following:

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Prepares and organizes all Council and Committee meeting materials, including meeting notices, agendas, draft resolutions, contracts, budgets, and supporting documents.
  • Provides reports twice per month to the Council on assignments, duties, project status, and budget performance; establishes objectives and meeting deadlines; administers programs and tribal operations.
  • Represents or assists the Council in negotiations and administrative meetings with governmental and non-governmental organizations, as instructed.
  • Oversees program budgets, ensures grant requirements and evaluations are met.
  • Plans, monitors, organizes, coordinates, and directs all Tribal activities.
  • Provides intervention, assessment, counseling, referrals, and coordinates services aligned with program goals.
  • Creates and gathers information for the Tribal quarterly newsletter.

The Tribal Administrator shall possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Federal, state and privately funded programs.
  • IT experience including basic office hardware, software and applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Zoom, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.
  • General office administration practices and procedures.
  • State and Federal Labor regulations and practices.
  • Management oversight of project contracts.
  • Budget preparation and administration.
  • Planning activities and strategies.
  • Working with people from different walks of life.
  • Effectively communicate in written form and orally.
  • Alaska Native concerns, issues, and problems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
  • Three years of executive management experience.
  • Two years of grant writing and grant management experience.
  • Fiscal and budgetary management experience.
  • Personnel management experience.
  • Valid Alaskan driver’s license required.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and compliance requirements.

The Tribal Administrator will work independently, with minimal supervision, and represent the Tribe professionally. They will demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, manage stress, and handle crisis situations under pressure.

Candidates should be self-motivated, cooperative, willing to work as a team member and leader, possess consistent and timely attendance, maintain a neat appearance, and display a helpful attitude. Proficiency with office equipment and a range of computer programs is required.

A background check—including criminal history and fingerprinting—is required. The Tribal Administrator must maintain an Alaskan driver’s license with a good driving record and will need to successfully complete HIPAA compliance training. There is a 90-day probation period.
