JOB SUMMARY: Supports the daily upkeep and safety of programming facilities under the direction of the Maintenance/ Facilities Supervisor. This position performs hands-on maintenance tasks, assists with inspections, and ensures that environments remain clean, safe, and functional in compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards and applicable state and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Facility Maintenance Support
  1. Perform routine maintenance tasks such as minor repairs, furniture assembly, light plumbing, and basic electrical work under supervisor guidance
  2. Assist with moving and setting up furniture, equipment, and supplies
  3. Conduct daily walkthroughs to identify and report safety or maintenance concerns
  4. Support janitorial staff by addressing immediate cleanliness or sanitation needs
  5. Maintain organized storage areas and assist with the inventory of supplies and equipment
  6. Assist with playground and outdoor area upkeep, including snow removal, trash pickup, and minor landscaping.
    1. Safety & Compliance Assistance
  1. Support the Maintenance/Facilities Supervisor in preparing for inspections and drills
  2. Participate in monthly fire drills and emergency preparedness activities
  3. Help maintain logs and documentation related to facility checks and repairs
  4. Follow all safety procedures and report hazards or incidents promptly.
    1. Equipment and Supply Handling
  1. Assist with receiving, unpacking, and distributing deliveries of equipment and supplies
  2. Help with the safe storage and disposal of outdated or broken items
  3. Maintain cleanliness and order in mechanical rooms, janitor closets, and utility areas.
    1. Team Collaboration
  1. Work closely with the Maintenance/Facilities Supervisor and other staff to ensure smooth facility operations
  2. Provide courteous and responsive support to staff regarding facility-related needs
  3. Participate in training related to safety, emergency procedures, and equipment use.

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  1. Cultural Knowledge: Must be familiar with Alaska Native/American Indian heritage and culture and be able to serve and effectively communicate with the children and families enrolled in the CINHS program.
  2. Basic knowledge of facility maintenance and safety practices
  3. Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently with minimal supervision
  4. Physical ability to lift, carry, and move heavy objects and perform manual labor
  5. Strong communication and teamwork skills
  6. Willingness to learn and follow all applicable health, safety, and licensing regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma or GED required
  2. CPR/ First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire
  3. Successful completion of TB and hepatitis screenings and required vaccinations
  4. Must be able to pass a criminal background check as required by state and federal law
  5. Current Alaska driver’s license must be at least 21 years old with a clean driving record and proof of insurance – Preferred
  6. Preferred: Experience in custodial, maintenance, or facilities support work.
