Timber Harvest Technician

H2H Harvesting is seeking several Timber Harvest Technicians. This position will supports timber harvesting operations, ensuring efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible logging activities. The Timber Harvest Technician assists in the planning, execution, and monitoring of timber harvesting operations. This role involves fieldwork in forested areas (remote areas at times), operating equipment, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and maintaining safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Timber harvest road and unit layout: Work with foresters and others traveling into remote locations by boat and plane in rugged field conditions in inclement weather to assist in flagging timber harvest boundaries, putting in stream buffers, flagging road lines, brushing out road centerlines and trails. Work may also include using paint to mark trees and performing timber inventory work measuring trees.  
    • Site Preparation: Mark trees for harvest, clear brush, and prepare access roads or landing areas.
    • Data Collection: Measure and record timber volumes, species, and quality; assist with inventory and mapping using GPS or other tools.
    • Reforestation Support: Assist with post-harvest activities like planting seedlings or site restoration.
  • Harvest Operations: Assist with felling, bucking, skidding, and transporting timber using chainsaws, skidders, or other forestry equipment.
    • Requires proficient use of a chainsaw for the felling, bucking and limbing of trees designated for harvest.  Slashing trees, limbs and brush after harvest.  
    • Operation of ATV and UTV for daily transportation and operations in remote rugged and uneven terrain.  
    • Fueling and greasing of equipment including ATV, UTV, pickups, skidders, feller bunchers and other harvest equipment.
    • Equipment Maintenance - Daily inspection, evaluation and maintenance of equipment, safety, readiness and proper operation in all phases of harvest operation.  This includes daily greasing, lubrication and cleaning of equipment.         This work is very dirty and messy work.   
    • Equipment repair and mechanic work on all equipment on the logging site. 
    • Other work setting chokers, dragging slash and brush, repairing roads and other such manual work using shovels, rakes and other hand tools. 
    • Walking roads and timber harvest units prior to harvest activities.         
  • Environmental Compliance: Follow sustainable forestry practices, adhering to local, state, and federal regulations BMPs (Best Management Practices for Timber Harvest and Logging).  Required to thoroughly know and practice these BPMs daily in all phases of the harvest operation.  Strict adherence to procedures for fueling and all use of hazardous substances.  
  • Safety Protocols
    • Have thorough knowledge and practice with TKC Timber Harvest Safety Program and Procedures. 
    • Complete Bear Training Safety course and Firearm Training.
    • Participate in daily Tailgate Safety Meetings
    • Ensure all work is in strict adherence to the TKC Timber Harvest Safety program. 
    • Properly use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times throughout the daily work.  
    • Immediately report any unsafe working conditions to the immediate supervisor.  
  • Team Coordination: Work closely with foresters, loggers, and supervisors to meet production goals and timelines.
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school
  • Experience: Prior experience in logging, forestry, or heavy equipment operation is a plus.
  • Skills
    • Proficiency with chainsaws, skidders, or other forestry equipment.
    • Basic knowledge of tree species, forest ecology, and silviculture.
    • Physical fitness for demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
    • Ability to read maps, use GPS, and interpret harvest plans.
    • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Certifications: Valid driver’s license; certifications like chainsaw safety, first aid, or equipment operation may be required.
  • Gear: Must have appropriate outdoor gear.
  • Other: Willingness to work in remote locations and irregular hours.
  • Other: Qualified and capable of operating a firearm for defense.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily outdoors in forests, often in rugged terrain.
  • Exposure to weather extremes, insects, and heavy machinery.
  • May require travel or extended periods at logging sites.
  • Workdays may be long and will require overtime on some weekends and holidays.
