WORK HOURS: 7.5 Hrs/day
DUTIES: The Community Wellness Coach will facilitate a culturally grounded curriculum for youth focusing on suicide and substance abuse prevention, integrated with primary kayaking recreational activities. Must collaborate with project staff, tribes, communities, strategic partners and schools to deliver curriculum through recreational activities, gatherings, arts and crafts, and other supportive prevention activities. In collaboration with the Wellness Project Coordinator/BH Clinician, provide screening and referral services to participants requesting substance abuse/mental health treatment for themselves or for family. Advocate and assist in project postvention and curriculum review practices to provide culturally responsive care to those impacted by suicide death and attempts. Hours of work are 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week.
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma/GED. Kayak guiding or outdoor leadership experience preferred. Commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and wellness in the community. Experience in facilitating youth programs, preferably with a focus on wellness, mental health, or substance abuse prevention. Passionate about the outdoors and have an interest in rural healthcare and recreational therapy approaches. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and skilled in group facilitation. Demonstrated computer proficiency. Lead/sweep kayak trips for individuals and groups, able to monitor safety and respond quickly to any emergencies or incidents that may arise during project activities. Experience working with healthcare professionals, local community structures, government agencies, academic institutions, private organizations, and non-profit corporations. Ability to deliver and execute instructions and apply specific guidelines to varied environmental situations, and the ability to effectively express both written and oral information. Prior experience working in or with tribal communities is advantageous. Willing to take training and attend workshops and meetings periodically to enhance job performance and knowledge. Willingness and means to travel and have a valid Alaska Driver’s License.
