JOB DESCRIPTION 

Job Title:            Substitute Teacher 

Department:       Clare Swan Early Learning Center 

Reports To:        Education and Disabilities Manager 

Supervises:        None 

FLSA Status:     Non-Exempt 

Pay Grade:         N2 

Job Type:           On-Call, less than 30 hours per week 

AKBCU:            Yes
ICPA:                 Yes 

 

General Functions: 

The Substitute Teacher will work on-call and will be responsible for providing quality education to infant and toddlers, with the goal of increasing the social competence, school readiness, and knowledge and pride in traditional Alaska Native culture and heritage. This position requires   ensuring a healthy, safe environment while supervising simultaneous learning activities.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the implementation of lesson plans to enhance the education, health, social and emotional growth of children and families served.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching strategies to meet educational and developmental goals and the physical, emotional, social, cultural, cognitive and language needs of enrolled children.
  • Utilize appropriate discipline and guidance techniques such as redirection, acknowledgement of appropriate behavior, and setting acceptable limits.
  • Provide a healthy, safe and secure learning environment using consistent limits, appropriate guidance techniques, and the development of an atmosphere of respect for children and adults.
  • Provide coverage at the Drop-in Center as needed.

  • Ability to promote feelings of security and trust in infants/toddlers and preschoolers by being warm, supportive, and comforting, and by establishing strong and caring relationships with them.
  • Ability to provide children with experiences and opportunities that allow them to develop curiosity, initiative, problem-solving skills, and creativity, as well as a sense of self and a feeling of belonging.
  • Ability to conduct developmental screenings of infants/ toddlers and preschoolers motor, language, social, cognitive, perceptual, and emotional skills.
  • Flexibility with respect to time and days available to work, as well as flexibility with work tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to support teachers in performing individual and group learning activities.
  • Monitor and assist in positive strategies to prevent aggressive behavior and to deescalate volatile situations.
  • Required participation in 15 hours of training annually as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) Certified or obtained within 1 year of employment.
  • One (1) year of experience working with children.
  • Available to work 10 or more hours per week.
  • Infant/Toddler CPR/First Aid Certified.
  • Must provide copy of current Health Report.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training and cultural needs of the Alaska Native/American Indian community.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory state and federal background check.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Two (2) years of experience working in a Head Start environment.
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license and be insurable under CITC’s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver’s license for at least three years.  
  • Former or current Head Start Parents are encouraged to apply. 

 

Work Environment:  

Lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs. intermittently, standing for a long period of time, stooping and bending will be required. This position will involve daily exposure to weather.
