GVEA is an electric cooperative which maintains 3,292 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 40 substations, and 9 generating facilities. Our system is interconnected with Fort Wainwright, Eielson AFB, Fort Greely, the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and all of the electric utilities in the Alaska Railbelt, extending from Homer to Fairbanks. Powering the Interior of Alaska, GVEA contributes to the economic, environmental, and social viability of our communities.
As a Mechanic at Golden Valley Electric Association, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of all power plant mechanical equipment. Your responsibilities will encompass preventive and corrective maintenance for turbine generators, boilers, fans, pumps, heat exchangers, conveyors, compressors, and more. You'll utilize your troubleshooting skills to identify root causes of failures and propose effective solutions, all while collaborating with outside contractors to meet quality, scheduling, and cost targets. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to train Plant Technicians on mechanical maintenance, sharing your expertise to elevate the team's capabilities. In the course of capital projects, you may also engage in equipment modification, fabrication, and installation.
This position may require call-in for emergency maintenance during off-hours, ensuring the continuous operation of our vital services. Your competence in understanding plant and equipment operations will be essential to your success in this dynamic role.
To excel as a Mechanic at Golden Valley Electric Association, candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A welding certification is preferred, as you'll be required to demonstrate your skills by passing a welding test. Proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical equipment is essential, along with the ability to analyze and understand the principles of plant operations.
Strong communication skills are needed to effectively interface with outside contractors and to train Plant Technicians in mechanical maintenance. A valid Alaska driver's license is mandatory, ensuring that you can navigate the work environment safely and efficiently. Familiarity with various mechanical tools and software will also enhance your effectiveness in performing preventive and corrective maintenance tasks.
