Tour Guide (Full-Time, Temporary)

This is a full-time, temporary position with Tundra Tours, Inc.

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator the Tour Guide drives and leads tours for tour participants and is responsible for the overall transportation needs of the tours and shuttles, while providing assistance, communicating an objective and approved interpretation of cultural, historical and contemporary heritage as well as information about the people, the area and the wildlife to tour participants. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  • Provides guests and employees assistance and information enthusiastically and professionally. Ensures respectful and positive interactions through effective communications with tour participants, co-workers, staff and management and demonstrate a willingness to share about positive stories and life experiences that presents life in the Arctic region in a favorable light.
  • Ensures tour participant’s enrichment of Barrow, the Arctic Region and Inupiat Culture, Traditions and Heritage through presentation and communication about Barrow, the Arctic and traditional Inupiaq attire, history, customs, folklore and games to tour participants individually and/or in a group.
  • Ensuring satisfaction and the safety while driving, loading/unloading and touring of the passengers, and assets by facilitating and operating within the perameters of the company’s policies, local, state and federal laws and ensuring the cleanliness, aestheitcs, safety and security of the tour enviroment, equipment and company's vehicles to include buses, vans and trucks.
  • Responsible for effective tour operations by ensuring the proper paperwork, supplies and equipment is ready and ensuring the timeliness of the schedule, itinerary, route, events and activities to meet the needs of the tour and the performance.
  • Ensuring efficient, cooperative and cohesive work with the hotel staff, entertainers, tour staff and management by making reasonable and safe decisions about working with other employees and within the work environment.
  • Ensures tour participants enjoyment of Inupiaq traditional music through monitoring with meter the volume is at an enjoyable volume and safe level for tour participants.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Strong knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the Inupiat culture.
  • High school or equivalent certification.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must have and maintain a C.D.L. Class B with passenger endorsement or obtain one prior to employment.
  • Competent organizational skills and effective interpersonal skills with a friendly, customer-oriented personality.
  • Ability to speak in a clear and understandable manner and write legibly.
  • Must be able to work independently, and must be willing to work shifts that vary from day to night and operate seven days a week.
  • The ability to speak and understand the Inupiaq language is important and preferred.
