Join the UAA Grounds crew this season and expand your equipment operator and horticulture skill sets. This is a seasonal, full-time position based on the UAA campus with an anticipated mid-April to early-May start date (start dates are flexible). Positions last approximately six months from time of hire.

The Grounds Team maintains over 360 acres of land at UAA with a goal of keeping campus a clean, safe and attractive place to learn, work and play. Seasonal employees assist staff with a variety of landscape maintenance tasks: mowing & trimming, raking, sod repair, pruning, planting, fertilizing, irrigation of trees and shrubs, weed control, and care of annual and perennial flowers. Employees utilize many types of hand and power tools; operate vehicles and light-duty equipment; and assist with interior plant maintenance. Other responsibilities include walkway sweeping, trash and litter pickup, event support, hardscape and signage repair and minor maintenance of tools and equipment.

An applicant must possess good communication skills; the ability to understand and follow directions and provide feedback to supervisor; and the ability to perform strenuous labor over long periods of time in all types of weather. Employees must provide your own protective clothing; i.e., rain gear, appropriate footwear. Additional personal protective equipment will be provided. Applicants must promote a culture of safety and be available to work a regular 8-hour shift between the department hours, 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Minimum Qualifications:

General Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Experience with and a willingness to learn and perform new landscape maintenance and installation tasks, including installation and maintenance of trees, shrubs, annual and perennial flower beds, and lawns. Experience operating landscape equipment (mowers, Toolcats, tractors, skid steers, small tanker trucks) and using hand tools preferred. Experience with customer service and working in a team environment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY: Ability to use a computer for timesheet recording, e-mail and virtual meetings.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: A valid AK Driver's License and a DMV driving record meeting EHS safe driver criteria is required for the position:

1. Possess a current, valid driver's license (probationary, court restricted, international drivers' license, or a drivers' permit are NOT acceptable);
2. Have at least three (3) years driving experience as a licensed driver;
3. Be in compliance with the State of Alaska's DMV licensing and insurance requirements;
4. Attend and successfully complete a campus approved drivers' safety course;
5. Have not been convicted within the last three years for:

• Two or more moving violations.
• Two or more at fault accidents.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• A pattern of moving violations or reckless driving behavior which is demonstrated by the accumulation of more than five points against their drivers' license.

Position Details:

This position is located on the UAA Main campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time, seasonal Temporary Local 6070 position. New hires will be placed on the https://www.alaska.edu/hr/labor/labor-relations/local-6070.php#collapse3d13e356, 00_M3, Step 1 ($19.23/hr) based on education and experience.

Hired to work in a pooled position. Hours will be determined by the hiring authority. Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits, except as otherwise required by law or collective bargaining agreement. Refer to University Regulation 04.01.050.F for service restrictions.
