Research Computing Systems (RCS), in the UAF Geophysical Institute (GI), is looking for a System Support Specialist to provide researcher assistance, Linux system administration, and Windows/PC or Mac workstation support as part of our team of research cyberinfrastructure analysts and engineers. We are a diverse group of IT professionals supporting a core set of cyberinfrastructure services for a wide variety of UAF research projects and developing and maintaining specific systems for researchers. RCS team members work together and independently to ensure researchers have high-performing and adaptable networks, storage, computers, web, and hosted systems and services they can depend on to conduct their research. You will work with team members to support many researchers and their projects at a premier research institution and enhance crucial research cyberinfrastructure services. We have a very flexible office environment and collaborate with multiple groups throughout the GI, UAF IT, and UA's Office of IT.

To thrive in this role, you should be passionate about seeing technology applied to conduct scientific research; have at least a working knowledge of the Linux environment; have the skills to handle both computer software and hardware issues; be able to work with many people with diverse technological skill sets; and enjoy working on multiple tasks in a day. Candidates need to be able to communicate effectively with researchers in a help desk/customer service environment. Strong candidates will have programming and scripting experience as well as a specific interest in one or more high-performance computing, clustering, large data storage, virtualization, information security, networking, or Linux server administration. Critical thinking and self-initiative are required, as you will often be unsupervised when troubleshooting, researching, or performing other day-to-day tasks. As information technology is always evolving, the ability to stay abreast of changes and communicate them to the rest of the team is indispensable.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (i.e. Information Technology, Computer Science, or other related field) or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.

2 years experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred.

Position Details:

This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. The successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office on the first day of employment.
