The sports editor serves as editor over reporters who create written and video content related to

UAA sports. Also, the sports editor is responsible for creating two written or video stories each

week. Because many sporting events happen over the weekend, they are expected to work

over the weekend and turn stories around quickly.

The sports editor holds a meeting each week with reporters to discuss and pitch stories. They

provide guidance on how to find and research stories and brainstorm ideas. They provide

content edits and ensure reporters are completing edits and stories by weekly deadlines. They

help reporters gain any necessary permission to access events and approval to use materials

produced by outside sources.

The sport editor onboards sports reporters and trains them on news writing, story telling, opinion

writing, video production, media ethics, and Associated Press style. They work with sports

reporters to collect video, audio and information for sports related stories.

The sports editor works under the supervision of the executive editor. They work with other staff

on the paper to prepare, develop and repackage content for use in other mediums. They help

implement projects, assume the responsibilities of vacancies below them, and help achieve the

long-term goals of The Northern Light.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

 

• Possess excellent verbal and written skills.

 

• Ability to write and edit articles or columns with attention to grammar, spelling, structure and

clarity.

 

• Ability to edit stories for accuracy and unbiased, thorough reporting.

 

• Ability to offer suggestions to improve persuasive writing and opinion pieces.

 

• Possess basic knowledge of video and audio editing.

 

• Ability to provide feedback and constructive criticism on video and audio projects.

 

• Ability to meet deadlines.

 

• Work cooperatively with others on creative projects.

 

• Lead a team, hold meetings, set overarching goals, and coordinate staff projects.

 

• Ability to prepare, develop, and/or repackage content for use in other media.

 

• Possess familiarity with word processors, Google Drive, Windows and Macintosh

computers.

 

• Ability to present news in a balanced and unbiased way.

 

Preferred knowledge/skills/abilities:

 

• College level courses in journalism and public communications.

 

• Experience working on a publication.

 

• Experience with The Associated Press style.

 

• Knowledge of copyright laws, the First Amendment, the Freedom of Information Act and

media ethics.

 

Position Details:

 

This is a part-time, up to 20 hours a week, student position paying $12.52/hour.
