About the Library and the University:

The Consortium Library Dean promotes a vibrant and inspiring environment for advancing the goals of the Library and its faculty and staff while responding to the opportunities and challenges of the future. The Dean works closely with Library faculty and staff to provide services and foster a supportive professional workplace and productive community of scholarly achievement. The Library Dean advocates for, represents, and serves as the voice of the Library to the University, the Statewide partnerships, and the community. Reasoned, collaborative, and transparent decision-making is essential to achieving these goals. The Dean manages an annual operating budget of $5.9 million and oversees a team of 50+ staff, faculty, and students in eight departments, collaborating closely with the partners, Alaska Pacific University (APU) and Alaska Resource Library and Information Services (ARLIS).

The UAA/APU Consortium Library serves both University of Alaska Anchorage, the state's largest post-secondary institution, and Alaska Pacific University, a private liberal arts college. We are the center of the Alaska Library Catalog, a consortium of 88 public, academic, special, and K-12 libraries who serve 92% of the population of Alaska. The shared catalog has 3.2 million titles. The Alaska Leaders Archive will preserve and teach the legacy of leaders who have served our state. At UAA, Alaska's leaders of tomorrow benefit from the legacy of Alaska's past leaders. Facility renovations to the UAA/APU Consortium Library will create a modern archive to preserve and present the archival papers of Sen. Ted Stevens, as well as records of Indigenous leaders, elected officials and business and community leaders. UAA is the premier university in the heart of Alaska's largest city with campuses throughout Southcentral Alaska. The Anchorage campus offers programs in high-demand fields such as engineering, health, business, and education, as well as in the liberal arts and sciences. UAA career and technical education programs are closely aligned with Alaska's core industries, such as aviation, and oil and gas. UAA's campus is connected to 250 miles of trails where one can enjoy wooded seclusion, mountain vistas and ocean views. The city's 300,000 human residents share their space with an estimated 1,500 moose, not to mention bald eagles, bears, beavers, Dall sheep, and the occasional lynx. King and silver salmon fill Ship Creek all summer long, drawing anglers to one of the world's only urban salmon fisheries. We don't have to sacrifice urban amenities to live in the Last Frontier. Anchorage provides a bounty of museums, movie theaters, shopping, live music, sporting events and hundreds of restaurants. The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts is a world class facility which is home to the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, Anchorage Opera and Broadway Alaska, to name a few. Anchorage includes the country's most diverse Census tract, and more than 90 languages are spoken by students in the Anchorage School District.

This position, reporting to the Provost, requires an experienced and visionary leader to collaborate with the University community in positioning the Library for ongoing excellence in supporting student success. The successful candidate for this position will be deeply knowledgeable about emerging technologies and will use that understanding as a foundation for leading the library toward a vision of serving the current and future needs of UAA's and APU's students. Applicants must be eligible to achieve tenure at the rank of Professor of Library Science.

To thrive in this role, the Dean provides strategic, financial, and managerial leadership in executing the functions of the position and works collaboratively and collegially with faculty, staff, academic leadership, students, and external stakeholders to advance the mission, values, and strategic priorities of the Library and the University's Strategic Plan.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Applicants must be eligible to achieve tenure at the rank of Professor of Library Science.

• Expertise and experience from academic libraries and the library and information sciences disciplines.

• Ability to lead and manage in a complex environment.

• Demonstrated skill in financial planning and management of institutional resources.

• Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to collaborate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

• Knowledge of working with library faculty and their tenure and promotion requirements.

• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications:

• An ALA-Accredited MLIS or the equivalent degree.

• Record of at least five years of progressively responsible library administrative experience.

• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation.

• Expertise and experience from academic libraries and the library and information sciences disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated knowledge of key/emerging trends in academic libraries and higher education.

• Demonstrated success with collaborative library programs and services.

• Demonstrated success in strengthening workplace culture with respect to diversity and inclusion.

• Record of success in a Library leadership role that entails recruiting, leading, managing, and collaborating with library employees, including instituting and supporting professional development and research opportunities to build capacity for faculty and staff and for the Library team as a whole.

• Ability to lead innovative and inclusive strategic visioning, planning, and action for a public, 21st century academic library.

• Experience with institutional and program accreditation requirements.

• Demonstrated experience with open scholarship efforts, such as institutional repositories, open access publishing, and open education resources.

• Successful experience fundraising or working with donors and a record of obtaining grants or other monetary donations.

• A PhD in Library Science or related field.

Position Details:

This position is located at the University Alaska campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and https://www.alaska.edu/hr/benefits/support/prospectiveemployees.php.
