ANSEP Director of Summer Acceleration Programs (Temporary)

Come join an award-winning program at ANSEP. We are recruiting for an ANSEP Temporary Director of Summer Acceleration Programs. This position will manage and oversee ANSEP's 2024 Summer Acceleration Academy in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) Summer Acceleration Academy is held over 5 weeks during the summer months for students from across the state of Alaska. The Summer Acceleration Academy offers participants the opportunity to experience an introduction to student life on the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) campus. Students in the Acceleration Academy live on the UAA campus for the 5-week duration while taking one or two college level courses. Acceleration Academy students also participate in a variety of academy components that include the following: hands‐on modules covering a wide cross-section of STEM topics, team building exercises, social activities, field trips, and exposure to Alaska Native cultures. Additionally, students involved in the summer Acceleration Academy have opportunities to network with STEM and other professionals, mentoring conducted by Youth Peer Mentors, participate in collaborative study sessions, career exploration and be eligible for scholarship opportunities.

Under the guidance and direction of the ANSEP Directors, the Summer Director plays a key role in ensuring that the 5-week summer Acceleration Academy is successful and delivered with excellence. The Summer Director will assist in all aspects of planning the 5-week session in close coordination with ANSEP staff, Youth Peer Mentors, Lead Youth Peer Mentors and Student Success Coordinators. The Summer Director will provide direction for ANSEP staff to ensure students are enrolled and prepared to excel in their coursework and transition into a degree-seeking program at UAA. The Summer Director will assist in the coordination of STEM and social activities as well as ANSEP staff work assignments.

To excel in this role, the candidate should have leadership and administrative experience with education programs. The candidate should have experience mentoring teens and young adults and strong organizational and interpersonal skills. It is preferred that the candidate have experience with residential programs and experience in working with Alaska Native, American Indian, and rural students and cultures.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related field and five years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Master's degree preferred.
• Knowledge of relational databases, Google Suite and basic computer operations.
• Knowledge of, and the ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, processes, policies, and procedures related to higher education and student development.
• Knowledge or concentration area related to STEM.
• Ability to supervise and manage a large team of staff members.
• Ability to assist or advise students in entry level courses related to STEM.
• Ability to develop and recommend changes operationally to enhance program and student development.
• Ability to determine appropriateness of exception requests for program participants in line with program policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of or experience working with youth and/or residential programs
• Three years progressively responsible relevant experience and two years management experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• At least 21 years of age. Current driver's license, satisfactory completion of University of Alaska safe driving criteria
• Ability to complete Protection of Minors background check and training requirements. Ability to observe the drug free, smoke free campus policy.
• Experience working with pre-college students

Position Details:

This position is located on the Anchorage campus. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt staff position.

The work will be performed in Anchorage with some field trips off campus. The successful candidate will start as soon as possible and the contract will end on August 10th 2024.
