Job Title: Lands Manager  

Job Summary:
The Lands Manager is responsible for the development of land use, land access, land condition assessments, and assists the Natural Resource Community Liaison with adherence to Sealaska’s natural resource native heritage and culture policies. Actively pursues supplemental funding opportunities, whether State, Federal, or philanthropic to support the Sealaska land management strategy. Oversees ANCSA land management; administers Natural Resources leases, permits, contracts, and agreements relating to Sealaska land and facilities; ensures that cultural and heritage values are protected and that shareholder objectives are addressed in land management initiatives; responsible for all ANCSA 14(h)(1) and 14(h)(8) land cadastral surveys, conveyances, and records and documents; and generally contributes to the effective operation of the Natural Resources department. 

Duties/Responsibilities:
•    Conduct field work to assist in assessment of Sealaska lands, including road condition surveys, general forest health, riparian surveys, and water quality.
•    Works with Sealaska Natural Resources Community Liaison for oversight of 14(h)(1) and 14(h)(8) land ownership records. 
•    Works with Sealaska GIS manager or others for surveying, platting, and mapping of company lands. 
•    Trespass monitoring and tracking of land uses to ensure compliance with applicable laws and agreements with Sealaska. 
•    Development of land transactions and participates in the negotiation of those transactions and administers the resulting agreements or contracts including land exchanges, sales, leases, permits, easements, and appraisals.
•    Reviews and analyzes relevant guidelines, regulations, policies, and laws relating to the management of company lands and resources and assists in implementing environmental protection and conservation measures.
•    Represents Sealaska as necessary at hearings, conferences, and meetings relating to land and resource management.
•    Prepares correspondence for approval and signature in accordance with Sealaska policy and procedures.
•    Assist Community Liaison for culture and historic site management incorporating the Native values of Haa Aaní (Our Land), Haa Shuká (Our Ancestors), Haa Latseen (Our Strength), and Wooch.Yax (Balance, Reciprocity and Respect).
•    Assists in implementation of a Land Stewardship Plan for Sealaska lands.
•    Lead pursuit of supplemental funding opportunities through Private, State, Federal, and philanthropic entities to support Sealaska’s land management strategy.
•    Collaboration with Spruce Root, Sealaska Heritage Institute, the Sustainable Southeast Partnership network, state, and federal agencies with jurisdiction overlapping Sealaska lands, and other partners.
•    Other duties as assigned. 

Required Skills/Abilities: 
•    Ability to meet and coordinate the varying work demands of natural resources professional and technical experts.
•    Ability to organize, direct, and carry out document production and records maintenance.
•    Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and data entry. 
•    Familiar with ESRI ArcGIS software and applications for data collection.
•    Ability to interact diplomatically with Sealaska shareholders, visiting professionals, and the general public. 
•    Familiarity with Southeast region and with company properties.
•    Ability to perform independent research and read and interpret laws, regulations, technical reports, especially as related to land management and records, and for other topics as assigned.
•    Familiarity with ANCSA natural resource provisions.
•    Knowledge of land planning and management systems and demonstrated ability to maintain land records.
•    Ability to have significant impact on organizational success and productivity, with broad latitude for independent judgment.
•    Possess an advanced level of communication, reasoning, problem solving and interpersonal skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
•    Excellent interpersonal and written skills.
•    Excellent organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.
•    Ability to work in a team setting.
•    Ability to organize events and meetings.
•    Familiar with broad range of federal funding sources and online portals for administration of grant and program dollars. 
•    First aid and wilderness survival awareness.

Education and Experience:
•    Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Environmental sciences or forestry management.
•    2 years Forestry or Natural Resource management experience. The career level of the position will be determined by the years of relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Demands: 
•    Physical demand requirements are more than those for sedentary work.
•    Some travel within the Southeast Alaska region necessary, including remote landscapes.

•    The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.

•    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
•    Comfortable with transportation on small aircraft, helicopters, boats, and off-road vehicles. 
•    The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Work Environment: 
This position will be required to work in the outdoors, and at times may include walking and hiking several miles while carrying equipment weighing approximately 30 lbs.
