JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE:

The Culture Bearer Intern – Language Collaborates with program staff in planning, developing and implementing programs and activities for visitors of all ages. Collaborates with program staff in planning, developing and implementing programs and activities for visitors of all ages. Shares Alaska native language.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn and share about traditional Alaska Native language, fishing, art, plants, hunting, dancing, storytelling, etc.
  • Share Alaska native language with Interns and general visiting public
  • Be knowledgeable about the Center’s mission, direction, and history. 
  • Provide information on Hall of Cultures exhibits, village sites, activities, performances, and performers.
  • Assist artists and performers as needed.
  • Assist with training and orientation of seasonal staff.
  • Cultural Awareness Workshops— assists with presentations at CAW’s as needed. 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Fluent in Alaska native language. 
  • Knowledge of Alaska Native cultures
  • Individual will need good communication skills; must be able to lead and instruct a group of youth interns in an effective manner. 
  • Individual must have the ability to multi-task and have the ability to use good judgment. 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Additional duties as assigned based on needs of the business.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Weather:

  • Indoors: Primarily in an environmentally controlled office;
  • Outdoors: Ability to work outside in all weather conditions typical for Anchorage Alaska.

Noise level:

  • Quiet to moderate.

Physical requirements:

  • Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
