Job Title: Fisheries Technician II

Department: Environmental Stewardship Department

Reports to: Environmental Stewardship Director

Position Summary: This position is approximately 26 weeks long as part of a two-person field crew for a Salmon Research Project.  The position will begin in April and will continue through October.  This position is a full-time position including benefits, with possible overtime and possible evening and weekend hours.  The position requires daily field work, including extensive work walking in and around Moose Creek and other rivers in the Matanuska Watershed, catching fish with minnow traps and fyke nets, PIT tagging, measuring fish, data collection and reporting.  This position requires daily work with the CVTC Fisheries Biologist; frequent interactions with Environmental Stewardship Department staff members; and occasional interactions with federal and state agency scientists, the public, community members, and other Tribal departments.  

Qualifications, Education & Experience:

High School Diploma or GED is required.

A valid Alaska Driver’s License and the ability to be insured on the Tribe’s vehicle insurance policy.

Over 2 years up to 3 years of relevant experience.

Must have experience with and ability for hiking 4 + hours over very challenging terrain (including streams and rivers) with a backpack of equipment, hiking in streams/rivers and conducting work in the field.  

Must have knowledge of basic computer programs and willingness to use iPad in the field for

data recording.  Experience identifying juvenile salmon, using a minnow trap, fyke net or beach

seine for fishing, and PIT tagging are strongly preferred.  May be required to pass a fitness test

and/or physical.

American Indian Peoples.  CVTC also has a local hiring preference.
