Afognak Native Corporation has an exciting opportunity for a Lands Manager in Kodiak, Alaska.  The position of Lands Manager reports to the SVP of Community Investments and leads timber operations for Afognak Native Corporation, to include timber contract administration, environmental stewardship and oversight, and future timber contract planning.

  • Timber Contract Administration
    • Coordinate with Lands and Timber Operator, overseeing timber harvest activities, including managing contractors and vendors and the Corporation’s relationship with government agencies.
    • Manage unit start-up/close out; utilization; mapping; road construction and maintenance based on ANC’s goals.
    • Coordinate with ANC’s timber-related staff to solicit data and field-related information to administer the contract and generate reports.
    • Provide reports to ANC management as required.
    • Maintain compliance with state and federal agreements, laws, and regulations.
  • Environmental Stewardship and Oversight
    • Oversee ongoing reforestation activities, including managing contractors and vendors and the Corporation’s relationship with government agencies.
    • Develop strategies to strengthen infrastructure such as roads and bridges to prevent environmental degradation.
    • Promote timber harvest practices and reforestation that supports Afognak’s environmental stewardship goals.
    • Maintain compliance with state and federal agreements, laws, and regulations.
    • Observe and report liability risks, development opportunities, environmental issues, and political developments that affect corporate land and natural resources.
  • Future Timber Contract Planning
    • Work with ANC and Timber Operator staff to assess volume for a future timber contract.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Payrate: $75,000 to $112,000 Annually

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in natural resources or forestry preferred or five years minimum experience in related field.
  • Experience in timber operations and land management preferred.
  • Past experience working with partners, contractors, or vendors
  • Knowledge of ANCSA, ANILCA, and Kodiak Island Borough codes and ordinances.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work effectively.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and work in a remote environment.
  • Willing to travel periodically to Afognak Island by small boat, plane, and all-terrain vehicles is required.
  • Valid state driver’s license with a clean driving record, to qualify as an authorized driver under the Afognak Native Corporation’s established auto and insurance policy requirements.
  • Able to adhere to all policies, and safety and health rules and regulations.
